A College Professor

Ryan Swayze

Walking through Centennial Hall, strolling through the halls, making it to the exercise science wing. Greeted by the professors, but one stands out from most. Dr. Luke Haile with a friendly smile ready to vividly listen and help with anything he can. He’s a mentor for many students. “I started out at a local high school in central Columbia and studied for my bachelor's here at Bloomsburg as an exercise science major. I liked the idea of physical therapy or cardiac rehab due to loving the research end of things which I knew I needed a master's degree for. Luckily got my masters in exercise physiology here at Bloomsburg then went to Pittsburg for my PhD. At Pittsburg, I got a lot of great learning experiences to help with my teaching which is very rare for PhD programs do give that type of experience, so I am grateful for that. I was able to get a lot of great hands-on experience at their children's hospital there. They had an amazing center for exercise and research. I liked the clinical research side of things, but learning about how to be a better teacher to students and fell in love with becoming a professor."

He loves his job as a professor and is now in his 15th year of being a professor. He bounced around from different universities, loving each one for their own reasons, but ended up making it back to his home university where his whole life began. With the job of a professor, he advises many students, helping with their rigorous coursework, questions they have about class scheduling, and aiding them in their future endeavors. Like most teachers and professors, he truly cares about his student's success as he expresses “The most rewarding part of my job is being able to give students the success they deserve. Whether it’s graduate school or going straight into a career. I love it, especially when they finally get there, and I get the opportunity to invite them to speak in front of a lecture. That to me is the most rewarding part of the job.”

There aren’t many things that he dislikes about the job of a university professor, however, the only thing he truly dislikes is when a student comes in and expects him to do the work for them. It fills him with disappointment when a student comes into meetings with excuses for not getting tasks done, not having the want or care to put in the work and effort it takes to go through and finish college.

Outside of being a college professor, Dr. Haile has a wife who works as a functional medicine practitioner at a clinic in town. She loves nutrition and lives an active lifestyle, hoping to encourage her patients to be active individuals too for their health. He used to play soccer in college, so he still plays when he finds the time. His son is 12 years old coming up on 13 and is incredible at soccer. His son plays for the youth Pennsylvania state team, and they have a game soon against the New York Red Bulls which is their youth state team. Another unique thing about him is that he collects vintage clothing because of his extremely environmentally conscious lifestyle. “I came down with a vintage clothing addiction. I buy, collect, and sell lots of vintage clothing and I do shows for the clothing in the summer. I really like clothing from the 50s and 60s. I’ll be going into class, and it is just I little thing that I love. Walking into a lecture hall and none of the students know I am wearing something from World War 2. I see it as my escape to be my own person. And it is great to just go out to the shows with other people and they have no idea who I am or what I do. I think that truly is great that a little group of guys just have a similar interest to bond over and no one bats an eye that I happen to have a PhD or I’m a professor which I love because I don’t identify as that. I more identify as a normal everyday person who enjoys spending time with my kids and is passionate about health, but I also like to geek out over old vintage t-shirts.”

Just like every other person Dr Luke Haile is a man living the life he loves no matter his line of work. There is lots of passion, love, and pride that goes into not only his family but also his practice for being a professor, advisor, and great mentor for many students.
